The annual exhibition is  held at our Guild rooms
at the bottom end of Mary street Turnbull Thomson park
in the former Southland Darts assoc. building.

All welcome to enjoy this exhibition of woodcraft which
is made by the members of the Guild.

A range of woodwork / craft / toys is available for sale during
the two weeks of the exhibition so perhaps some pre-Christmas
shopping is what you are looking for also.

Please note that there is no Eftpos available
Please also note that a sign in is required when entering
and distancing adhered to thank you.

If you are keen to give woodworking a go then you are most welcome
to explore our very well kitted out workspace and timber store which
is "chocka" with wood for carving, turning and any other projects.

We are a friendly team of men and woman of almost all ages.
You will find a great source of knowledge and skill which could be
picked up from all members and besides that we also have

a great library with a wealth of information about 

anything woodwork .

Firewood Sale on now !

 Yes indeed it is still cooler down South and this might be the right time to stock up on a stack of dry kindling and / or firewood for now or next season perhaps while stocks last.👀

Available right now from our club rooms

Box of kindling is $12 a box and bags of firewood 6 bags for $30

Or a surprising modest $6 a bag.

Open Saturday and Wednesday 9.30am - 2.30pm.

Look for the signs out bottom of Mary Street.

Beside Harvey Norman on the reserve.

This is a fundraiser for the club to desperately replenish our funds thank you.

Annual Exhibition Woodworkers Guild

 

 

 

 

Another one of our very popular yearly exhibitions will be mounted at our fantastic clubrooms.

This is a venue not to be missed where we show off our woodcraft skills at all levels from beginners to pro's.

A great opportunity also to have a browse for that exclusive Christmas present which are all made from wood as you can imagine and beautifully handmade.

A good range of gifts for sale from toys to more exclusive items. 

The sales of woodwork is also available on Wednesdays and Saturdays during opening hours.

 

During the exhibition there will be some members available to show you around the great workshop facilities and perhaps you may be tempted to become a member also at some stage and learn a new ( woodworking ) skill.

 

We are expecting a good turnout of the public because it has been popular in the past and the admission is free so .. see you there at 5 Mary street just behind the Harvey Norman store.

 

Travel snippets North Island

Perhaps now we are all locked in our homes for most of the time I thought that you might like to read a story about my travels to the North Island so here it is....

Made it just in time home  from Hamilton, before the big lockdown, where my wife and me spend 2 weeks at my sons place which was great indeed.
We've taken the opportunity also to travel the eastcape where we've been before once only an enjoyed that so much that we wanted to go back again. 

This was also an opportunity to dust off my camera once again to create some more memories about our family and the environs of the east cape.
And so it happened that we found ourselves in the Hukutaia domain about 8km from Opotiki where there is 4.5 hectares patch of native bush remnants with a major highlight a massive Puriri tree which is believed to be over 2000 years old.
TAKETAKERAU is the maori name for this tree which means so much as the Burial Tree.
The story is that this tree was used by Upokorehe as a place to store the bones of their distinguished dead.
The tree was highly tapu and any interference with the site was a deadly affront to the atua ( ancestral gods ) bringing death to the offenders.
When a storm damaged the tree and exposed the bones  it was decided to remove the bones, by local iwi, for reburial elsewhere.
We were very impressed with the sight of this tree and happy that we did visit this beautiful Hukutaia Domain.

 East Cape lighthouse was also on our little bucket list so after an interesting last 20km on gravel and very narrow in places road we got to the bottom of the hill  in one piece but lo and behold there were some stairs to climb to get to this lighthouse on the top of this rock.
This proved to be a real challenge because this was not your normal stairs but blocks of wood like railway sleepers spaced out nicely with a handrail provided in the bends.

I did not count the number of blocks but I was told there were about 800 of them and indeed it was hard yakka to get to the top with only one seat halfway to take a breather.
Anyway I got to the top and enjoyed the great view so the giant effort was well worth it.
